We are very excited to have a new baseball team and stadium in Hillsboro this summer, the Hillsboro Hops. All the excitement has brought some press my way and the Argus did a nice article about me and a couple of other artists at Sequoia Gallery and the art we created involving baseball. http://www.oregonlive.com/hillsboro/index.ssf/2013/06/sequoia_gallery_and_studios_ar.html
Each spring the art guilds from our area get together to show their work. The Oregon Potters Association, the Hand Weavers Guild, The Glass Guild, The Bead Association, The Wood Workers Guild, and the Creative Metal Arts Guild show their wares for three days at the Oregon Convention Center. I was in the show this year for the first time. It was held on April 26, 27,28. I learned a lot and made a lot of new connections. Some of the pieces I sold there were never photographed, however, one lady who purchase earrings requested that the ear wires be traded out for stainless steel so it gave me an opportunity to quickly document them with my own camera. These carnival ride fliers are from an antique tin toy. If you didn’t make it to the show this year, be sure to check it out in 2014.
The editors of Art Jewelry Magazine have chosen my pin titled “Lincoln Pin” to be in their newsletter this month. Even more exciting, they sent me a personal email requesting a larger format of the photo so that they might possibly use it in the print magazine along with other info about the piece and myself! Keep an eye out for it in upcoming issues.
You can expect to see these colors in everything you buy this year. The “pantone” is what the fashion and general marketing industry use as a palette for what is on trend for the coming seasons. Emerald Green is being singled out as the color of the 2013, just as tangerine orange was the color for 2012. http://www.pantone.com/pages/fcr.aspx?pg=21013&ca=4
I remember reading a letter from the editor in a jewelry magazine earlier this year. It was about the lack of art jewelry pins and brooches available to her while shopping for a friend. I wonder if that idea stuck in my head while I was at Penland School of Crafts this summer. I came home with five finished pieces and all of them were pins or brooches. This was especially strange for me since my usual is necklaces. Below are four of the pins created by me this summer.
I have been collecting bottle caps from work and seeing them in mass is really cool. Found these great examples of bottle cap jewelry online http://www.toxel.com/inspiration/2010/11/11/bottle-cap-jewelry/
Here is a picture of a bracelet and earrings I made using a few beer bottle caps, do you recognize them?
I will be one of three featured artists at Sequoia Gallery in Hillsboro, OR for the month of August. On display will be some of the new pieces I did at Penland as well as a few I did at home this month and some that I have had around for a while but have not had in the gallery yet. The two 2 dimensional artists that will be featured as well are fantastic painters, one works in oils and one works in watercolors. The opening reception will be on August 7th from 6-8pm, coinciding with Downtown Hillsboro’s Tuesday night market. If you cant make it to the opening you can still see the show all month long. 2012 August Sequoia Postcard (1)
I am sitting here still at Penland School of Crafts on my last night before I go back to Oregon and I am feeling all kinds of emotions. I am sad that my new friends have left to go back to their homes, yet anxious to see my family at mine. I am full of excitement about the new ideas and connections I made yet dreading the grind of my old daily routine taking time away from that. Exhausted yet wide awake, there is a sense of urgency to soak up every last bit of inspiration and moment of relaxation. Penland- you lived up to the hype, there is no other experience like this.
